  • Cookies - rubbing in method
  • Bread - raising agents and functions of ingredients
  • Pin Wheels - design development
  • Jam tarts/sausage rolls - designing, rubbing in method, shortcrust pastry and functions of ingredients

Assessment

Within Year 7 Food, students are assessed on their ability to produce a practical outcome and evaluate it.

Year 8

Theory Topics

  • Developing skills learnt in Year 7
  • Functions of ingredients - cakes, bread and pastry
  • Nutrients - planning a balanced meal
  • Methods of cooking
  • Food safety and poisoning
  • Food choice and religion

Practical Activities

  • Small cakes - function of ingredients and designing
  • Bread Based Pizza - functions of ingredients, designing for a purpose, eat well plate
  • Jam Tarts/Sausage rolls - functions of ingredients, rubbing in method
  • Chicken/Vegetable Curry - food poisoning, cross-contamination
  • Bolognese/Chilli con Carne - evaluating and design development

Assessment

Within Year 8 Food, students are assessed on their ability to produce a practical outcome and evaluate it.

Year 9

Theory Topics

  • Food poisoning and food safety
  • Cross-contamination and high/low risk foods
  • Food choice and religion
  • Nutrition
  • Design development - developing a product to suit a specific target market

Practical Activities

  • Chicken/Vegetable Curry - food poisoning, cross-contamination
  • Bolognese/Chilli con Carne - evaluating, design development
  • Lasagne - design development

Design Development Task

3 further practicals - pupil choice linking to design question of their choice. Practicals 1&2 are different trial ideas and practical 3 is a development of one of their trial ideas (1&2).

Assessment

Within Year 9 Food, students are assessed on their ability to produce a practical outcome and their technical understanding and knowledge.
