Personal Development

What
As your child progresses through Wordsley we ensure the inclusion of subjects such as Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), and Citizenship within their curriculum. While distinct from traditional academic disciplines, these subjects are fundamental to fostering well-rounded individuals prepared for the complexities of contemporary society. These sessions are delivered through a crafted curriculum by their form tutors once a week and by external professional companies through our 3 drop down days throughout the year.

RSE

RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) helps students learn about healthy relationships, including friendships, family, and romantic ones. It teaches important topics like:

Consent – understanding when and how to give or get permission.

Communication – how to talk and listen in a respectful way.

Boundaries – knowing your limits and respecting others’.

RSE also explains the changes that happen during puberty, both physically and emotionally. This helps students understand themselves better and feel less worried.

Another key part of RSE is learning how to stay safe, especially online. It talks about things like:

Online dangers

Bullying

Exploitation (when someone takes advantage of you)

Finally, RSE encourages respect for all kinds of people and relationships. It helps build a more inclusive and accepting society.

PSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) serves for developing the personal attributes and practical skills essential for navigating life’s challenges. PSHE, focuses on mental health (emotional regulation, resilience, stress management, support), physical health (nutrition, exercise, substance misuse risks), and financial literacy (budgeting, debt, consumer behaviour). It also covers career exploration, employability skills, and safety education (first aid, risk assessment).

Citizenship

Citizenship education fosters informed, active, and responsible community members by teaching UK democratic processes, legislative frameworks, and civic responsibilities. It also broadens pupils’ understanding of global issues (e.g., climate change, human rights) and encourages critical thinking, reasoned arguments, respectful debate, and community engagement.

For more information about the Personal Development curriculum please see our Relationship and sex education policy

Parents wishing to exercise their right to withdraw their child from non-statutory parts of the RSE and / or RE curriculum should contact the school via info@wordsley.dudley.sch.uk in the first instance.
