Curriculum Grouping
At The Wordsley School we are proud of the opportunities provided to all of our students through our outstanding curriculum. We are committed to personalising our offer to that of individual needs of each student in order to maximise their potential.
We encourage pupils to actively participate in lessons, to develop their independency and to take responsibility for aspects of their studies.
Year 7
Year 7 will be set centrally based on the Key Stage 2 data provided at the end of the Summer term and pupils will be in these sets from their first day. The sets will be reviewed at the end of term 1 to ensure all pupils are in sets that enable them to achieve.
Core and Foundation subjects will have 10 sets, 5 in X band and 5 (including key skills) in Y band.
DT will have 10 sets with 5 sets in each band.
PE will have 10 sets with 5 in each band.
The pupils will have KS2 SATs data as well as be assessed via NGRT on arrival; this data will be used to set pupils from the day they start. This data will be used, along with NGRT, to assign Growth Pathways. However, there will be an opportunity to reset pupils where appropriate at the end of the first term.
We are aiming to also complete NGRT and this will also support assigning pathways and therefore splitting into an upper X band and a Y band.
Maths and Science will be set hierarchically within each band with X band being above Y band. English will have sets 1, 2 and 3 in X band with 2 parallel sets – sets 4A and 4B, and 2 parallel sets 5A and 5B followed by 3 hierarchical sets in Y band.
Maths and Science X and Y bands will be determined differently to X and Y bands in English, foundation subjects, PE and DT. Foundation sets will be determined by English sets.
Foundation subjects will have 5 sets in X band and 5, including key skills, in Y band. The sets will be assigned with an upper set in each band and 3 parallel in each band with the addition of key skills in Y band.
Both PE and DT can determine their own setting within the band but a rationale must be provided to justify this.

Year 8
Core have 10 sets; Maths and Science are blocked together so can split the cohort and then set each band hierarchically. X band has 5 sets and Y band has 4 sets plus key skills. English setting will determine the spilt between the X and Y bands for all other subjects. English will have sets 1 and 2 in X band with 3 parallel sets – 3A, 3B and 3C and, 2 parallel sets 4A and 4B followed by 3 hierarchical sets in Y band.
Foundation have 9 sets; 4 in X band and 5 in Y band – X band have I higher set and 3 mixed, Y band have 4 mixed and then key skills.
DT has 10 sets with 5 in each band.
PE had 8 sets with 4 in each band.
Both PE and DT can determine their own setting within the band but a rationale must be provided to justify this.

Year 11
X band has 4 sets and Y band has 4 sets. Core all have 8 sets; Maths and Science are blocked together so can split the cohort by agreement; however, there must be agreement between the subjects regarding the bands and the focus on ensuring the pupils opting for separate sciences at GCSE are in the correct band for both subjects. Each band will then be set – Maths will be hierarchically but Science will have 2 Separate Science sets in X band (SA and SB) followed by 2 hierarchical Combined Science X band sets (C1 and C2), Y band will have 1 Separate Science set (SC) and 3 parallel Y band sets for Combined Science (CA, CB, CC). English, however, is split with PE and Ethics; the setting structure in English is a set 1 and 2 in X Band plus 2 parallel sets (3A and 3B) then Y band has 2 parallel sets (4A and 4B) followed by 2 hierarchical sets.
Option sets are mixed ability by their nature; however, should there be 2 or more sets of the same subject in an option block, the CAL can provide a rationale and agree the setting in that instance.
PE have 2 lessons and the CAL can provide a rationale and agree the type of setting applied.
Ethics have 4 sets in each band and the setting will be determined with discussion and a clear rationale with the SLT Line Manager.
